Synopsis

In this sermon, Pastor Makashinyi resumes the exposition of the first eleven chapters of the Book of Genesis.

Genesis is the book of beginnings, it introduces us to a great God who is Lord of all and Creator of everything. Up to this point in the narrative of Moses, he has used only one title for God -- it is the name "Elohim". He has used this 35 times in the opening chapter and the first three verses of chapter 2. However, when we come to verse 4, we see a switch from "Elohim" to "YHWH-Elohim". Secondly, we observe that there is a reversal in the things He has made. While chapter one focuses on the creation of the whole universe, chapter 2 focuses on man (both male and female) in relation to the creation.

We focus on chapter 2:7, where we observe that: (1) God formed man from the dust. (2) The grace of God is evident in man, in that He breathes the breath of life into his nostrils. This is not expressed on the creation account of other creatures. (3) Only man is created in the image of God. He has created us with self-consciousness, with the capacity for rationality.
