Synopsis

Before the fall, man was a creature of total faith. He lived in communion with God. Man believed that God was real and that everything about God was true and he gladly submitted to the leadership of God. Man's faith was perfect even though it wasn't mature in faith and years.

Man fell in sin and since then we have doubted God and "unbelieved" him. This was extended to various relationships. Each one of us comes with numerous questions about God which seek answers.

Drawing on several key words in Psalm 95, Hebrews warns us against allowing the unbelief of a hardened, sinful heart to cause one to fall away from the living God.

Unbelief is failure to be conscious of and acknowledge the relationship that exists and ought to exist between you and God. It manifests itself in contempt, grumbling and disobedience. The consequences of unbelief are apostasy, removal of spiritual blessings and spiritual death. The author of Hebrews exhorts us to "hold fast our confidence" until the end. A defection from the truth is damnable, therefore, we ought to take heed to this warning.
