Synopsis
DIY is part of our culture and everyday trends. However this doesn't apply to our faith in Christ. We cannot build an imagined God. When we turn to ourselves in the mode of DIY for answers we are saying we do not need God. This never works. Just like it didn't work for Adam and Eve when they thought the giant leap upwards would make them equals with God. They reached out for something that did not belong to them; they lusted over it.
After Adam and Eve sinned they realised they were naked and made garments out of leaves. This was futile because they decided to make their own way and not depend on God. At this moment they were dead spiritually. Their shame and guilt is laughable and is vanity. They imported the culture of DIY into religion and since then that has become the trend where people want and do it their own way in religion.
What makes man futile?
1. Man has a tendency to ignore God
2. Man has a determined and foolish design to imitate God. This is man's attempt in getting back to God. This translates into legalism as means of attaining salvation.
3. Man has a passionate and uncontrolled longing for self indulgence. Their acts shows a desperate act for self indulgence. Just like idol worshipping is about ourselves and our own satisfaction.
Application
1. Shame, fear and guilt are the bitter fruit of sin.
2. On account of sin we have become self confident people in our ignorance and forgetfulness of God. The gods we have fashioned can never drown a guilty conscience.
3. God provided coverings for them which were "once off" unlike the leaves they made. The coverings were made out of cloth, animal skin showing that blood was shed in order to bring them about. Showing how Christ came and died for our sins on the cross. His blood was shed for our sins. We cannot continue to live in our self made religion when the true God is reaching out to us to save us from our DIY religion.
