Synopsis

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith and the proof that all believers who have died will one day be resurrected as well (John 11:25, 1 Cor 15). The ascension of Jesus Christ is an integral part of the doctrine of the resurrection. Being part of the whole package of salvation, the ascension is therefore for our benefit. In this sermon, Elder Malipenga highlights some important truths arising from the ascension of Jesus Christ.

The ascension of Jesus Christ was anticipated by Himself. It was spoken of before it actually happened (Psalm 68:18).

The ascension of Jesus Christ demonstrates the humanity of Jesus Christ. Luke's accounts in Acts 1:9-11 and Luke 24:50-53 show that the disciples saw Him ascending into heaven. The resurrection was a bodily one and it is proved in his ascension.

The ascension points to the need to know Jesus in the heart as the risen and ascended Lord and Saviour, not just as historical Jesus.

The ascension points to the high priestly work of Jesus Christ in heaven (Hebrews 7:21-28). Jesus as High Priest is interceding for us just like the Holy Spirit intercede for us. Jesus is our advocate who stands for us before the accuser.

The ascension proves and fulfils the promise Jesus gave in John 14:2-3 – to prepare a place for His people.
